S4 Week 10 -- SUZUKA CIRCUIT - GRAND PRIX
In 1948, Soichiro Honda established the Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and oversaw its expansion from a wooden shack manufacturing bicycle motors to a multinational automobile and motorcycle manufacturer. Later, in 1962, his company decided to develop a new permanent circuit, Suzuka, to be used as the Honda test track. Today, the racing complex is still owned and managed by Honda.
Following multiple upgrades, the circuit was finally approved as Formula One compliant. The Japanese Grand Prix was held at Suzuka from 1987 to nowadays, at the exeption of years 2007 and 2008 when the circuit was closed for renovations and during which the F1 race was held at the Fujii Speedway owned by archrival Toyota.
The demanding and fast Japanese circuit rapidly became a favourite with drivers and fans, featuring some of the F1 calendar's most challenging corners, including the high-speed 130R and the famous Spoon Curve. Always scheduled late in the F1 calendar, it provided the scene for many nail-biting end-of-season deciders and some of the most dramatic and memorable moments in Formula One.
