The league was started in 2016 by Donald Strout. Since then, the league has continued to attract simracing enthusiasts who wish to race in a friendly, yet competitive setting. As iRacing has evolved, with new tracks and new cars being launched, while others are moved to the legacy list, the league has evolved with it. The original road racing car was the Pro Mazda, a medium powered single seater. This was replaced by the IndyPro 2000 series PM-18 car in season 15, and in turn replaced by the F3 car for season 29, and by the Super Formula Lights for season 32. The current single seater as of Season 37 is the Indy NXT car.
The NASCAR selection of cars and an oval series was introduced in season 8. From season 22 the Next Gen cars replaced the older class cars for the ovals series, and starting season 33, NASCAR Trucks are being used for the oval series.
To offer a choice for those not so interested in open wheelers or ovals, a separate GT3 series on road tracks was introduced and has grown very popular over the seasons. There have been other attempts ar running touring cars, such as the BMW M2 CS and GT4, but these proved to have limited participation and have been discontinued.
The league has always been run by the members on an enthusiast and non profit basis.
From the beginning, the league had participation from both Europe and North America, and there have been champions from seven different countries in the road series. In the ovals, by season 37, only US based drivers have made it to the top.
